-Show institutions
-Engage audiences attention
-Introduce characters
-Introduce location/setting/time
-Show the theme and genre of the film
-Introduce a narrative structure
-Use the conventions of a certain genre
-Establish the iconography
-Contain soundtrack (or lack of)
-Show/set the overall pace of the film
-Give clues that relate to future storyline of the film
